食道癌

食道癌は世界で９番目に多いがんであり、５年生存率は２５％以下である。主な２つの組織型は、扁平上皮癌(ECSC) と腺癌（EAC) である。ECSC は食道癌の中でも最もよく見られる組織型であるが、EAC の生じる率は西側諸国において、他のどのような悪性腫瘍よりも急速に増大している。ECSC の原因としてアルコールとタバコの摂取が挙げられる一方、EAC を進展させる最も重要な危険因子は、十二指腸胃逆流（胃食道逆流）である。細胞レベルの発がんの過程には多くの遺伝子変化が含まれるが、その中には p53 遺伝子の変異、cyclin D1 遺伝子の増幅などがある。
