概要    
横紋筋肉腫(RMS)は、小児と青年に最も多く見られる新生物のひとつである軟部肉腫である。RMS は骨格筋系列と関連があると推定されているが、前立腺や膀胱、胆嚢といった、組織学的に骨格筋を欠く器官にも存在しうる。RMS はいくつかの異なる組織学的サブタイプから成る集団を構成しており、その主なものは 胎児性横紋筋肉腫 (ERMS)と胞巣状横紋筋肉腫 (ARMS)である。ARMS は主に年齢の高い小児の胴体と四肢に生じる小児肉腫であり、他のタイプのRMSに比べ予後が不良である。ARMS は2;13と1;13の染色体転座と結びついているが、これらはそれぞれ PAX3-FOXO1A と PAX7-FOXO1A という融合タンパク質を生じる。これらの転座はその融合タンパク質の発現や機能、細胞内局在を野生型のタンパクに比べて変化させ、ついには増殖、分化、アポトーシスのパスウェイに変化を与えることにより、がん化に関与することになる。
