Tungiasis is a tropical ectoparasitosis caused by the permanent penetration of the female flea Tunga penetrans into the skin of its host. It is prevalent where people live in extreme poverty, occurring in many Latin American and African countries. The contamination occurs when walking barefoot in the sand.
