Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is an infectious disease caused by Pneumocystis jirovecii that belongs to the genus Pneumocystis. Members of the genus Pneumocystis are unicellular, eukaryotic organisms that reside in the lungs of many mammals. The 5 main species have been identified. PCP is a potentially life-threatening disease that occurs in immunocompromised patients.
