The enzyme has been characterized from mammals and from the bacterium Streptantibioticus cattleyicolor. In mammals it hydrolyses excess 4'-phosphopantetheine to prevent cell damage. In S. cattleyicolor it participates in the biosynthesis of the beta-lactam antibiotic thienamycin.
