KEGG   ENZYME: 2.1.1.373
Entry
EC 2.1.1.373                Enzyme
Name
2-hydroxy-4-(methylsulfanyl)butanoate S-methyltransferase;
dsyB (gene name);
methylthiohydroxybutyrate methyltransferase;
MTHB methyltransferase
Class
Transferases;
Transferring one-carbon groups;
Methyltransferases
Sysname
S-adenosyl-L-methionine:(2R)-2-hydroxy-4-(methylsulfanyl)butanoate S-methyltransferase
Reaction(IUBMB)
S-adenosyl-L-methionine + (2R)-2-hydroxy-4-(methylsulfanyl)butanoate = S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine + (2R)-4-(dimethylsulfaniumyl)-2-hydroxybutanoate [RN:R12666]
Reaction(KEGG)
R12666
Substrate
S-adenosyl-L-methionine [CPD:C00019];
(2R)-2-hydroxy-4-(methylsulfanyl)butanoate [CPD:C22315]
Product
S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine [CPD:C00021];
(2R)-4-(dimethylsulfaniumyl)-2-hydroxybutanoate [CPD:C22316]
Comment
The enzyme, characterized from the marine bacterium Labrenzia aggregata, participates in the biosynthesis of dimethylsulfoniopropanoate (DMSP). A eukaryotic enzyme that shares little sequence similarity with the bacterial enzyme was identified in many marine phytoplankton species.
