Proteus mirabilis is a motile gram-negative bacterium within the Enterobacteriaceae, that inhabits the environment. It causes a number of infections including those of the skin, respiratory tract, wounds, and urinary tract. Pyelonephritis caused by the bacterium primarily affects individuals with indwelling catheters or structural abnormalities of the urinary tract.
