Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm) infection, which causes chronic abdominal pain or persistent diarrhea, is caused by the ingestion of the larval stage of cysticerci in beef. T. saginata is distributed worldwide but has the highest prevalence in Southern and Eastern Africa.
